Factors affecting students from FE colleges applying to UG courses

Factors affecting students from FE colleges applying to UG courses.

Widening participation staff at the universities of Bristol and Bath recently undertook a joint project to investigate what may be affecting the progression rates of students from regional further education colleges onto undergraduate courses.
Data appeared to show that applications from FE colleges were less likely to result in an offer than those from other school types.
UCAS forms of rejected FE applicants were looked at with admission tutors to establish how their decision had been reached.
Alongside this, guidance managers in six regional FE colleges fed back about their experience of supporting students making applications with level 3 qualifications ranging from national diplomas and CACHE diplomas to A levels and access courses.
The resulting report covered a variety of issues including:
· predicted grades and GCSE results
· curriculum offer at colleges
· additional A level requirements
· assessment methods
· awareness of progression opportunities
· references and personal statements
